Overview and Application Guidelines

Purpose & Eligibility

This award was endowed by a donation from family and friends of the late Professor Auster. Awarded by the Council of the Faculty of Information Studies, this award is open to doctoral students in their dissertation research. Preference is given to students who have secured a title for their thesis and thesis committee. Two thirds of the total award will be granted as a scholarship to one student per year. The remaining portion of the award will be made available as a bursary for registered doctoral students demonstrating special financial need.

Award Value & Duration

The value of this award is dependent on the annual income of the endowment. Award disbursements may be split across multiple terms depending on total value.

This award is non-renewable (one year only).


How to Apply

To be considered for the scholarship portion of this award, applicants must complete the Ethel W. Auster Scholarship for Doctoral Research application form online.

To be considered for the bursary portion of this award, applicants must upload a completed Financial Need Assessment Form (PDF) to the online Ethel W. Auster Scholarship for Doctoral Research application form.

Deadline to Apply

Applications for 2023-24 will open in September 2023.
