Community outreach programs for museums

Community outreach programs for museums

This is an in-person workshop.

Museum outreach brings the museum to off-site locations and can range from activity box rentals, to instructor-led classroom activities, to travelling exhibitions. In this workshop, participants learn about a range of real-world community responsive outreach types (for instance, in-classroom, heritage fairs, pop-up exhibits, virtual tours) and the resources needed to make them happen. They will then break into teams to sketch out their own programs based on common outreach scenarios provided by the instructor.

Through this workshop, participants will:

  • Gain a foundational understanding of the wide spectrum of different outreach programming offered by museums in order to illustrate the ways they serve diverse communities.
  • Understand the importance of working with existing resources to address community needs and desires.
  • Within the team dynamic, contribute creatively and produce an outline for an outreach program.
