Extra courses

Extra courses information for:

Graduate students |  Undergraduate students

For our graduate students:

As per School of Graduate Studies (SGS) regulations, graduate students may not enrol in additional half/full courses beyond the number of courses required by their program of study. An exception may occur when an extra course is required if, for example, a supervisor feels that a student needs additional background in order to do his/her research.

Extra courses are subject to approval and Faculty permission is required; required courses cannot be designated as ‘EXT’.

Deadline to request: 2 weeks prior to course drop deadline of each term.

Students are only eligible to take up to 2 extra courses during their degree program.

Procedure:

  1. Complete the SGS Add/Drop form
  2. provide a rationale for requesting to take an extra course
  3. submit both items to Student Services for review

Extra courses are:

  • Listed with ‘EXT’ notation on the student’s transcript
  • Subject to the same regulations for grading, withdrawal and failure (FZ), as courses required for the degree
  • Not counted towards the student’s GPA – is not considered for averaging purposes
  • Not convertible to credit courses towards the student’s degree, after the drop deadline period has passed
  • Students will receive final grades to EXT courses
  • The final grades will be presented on the student’s official UofT transcript
