Come join the University of Toronto’s newest science policy group, the Toronto Science Policy Network (TSPN), in our kick-off event: a Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon! The #TSPNWikiEdit18 event will take place on Saturday September 22 from 12-5 PM at the Inforum Library (140 St. George Street).
In partnership with the University of Toronto Libraries, the goal of #TSPNWikiEdit18 is to create and update Wikipedia pages for Canadian scientists to highlight their scientific research, role in science policy and/or science communication. All members of the University of Toronto community are welcome to join.
At #TSPNWikiEdit18, we’ll teach you how Wikipedia editing in a short crash course, and then we’ll edit Wikipedia together in three structured sessions:
- A 30 min session dedicated to cleaning up current Wiki pages,
- A 1 hour session to expand current pages,
- A final 1 hr 45 min session to create new pages.
TSPN will provide a target list of wikipedia pages with a focus on women and individuals belonging to marginalized groups (as Wikipedia’s gender gap and racial bias is well-documented), but we welcome all edit-a-thon attendees to create and/or update pages they are interested in. Do you have a suggestion? Feel free to share it with us on social media using the hashtag #TSPNWikiEdit18, or via this Google sheet!
We are partnering with a number of student groups to bring you ‘hubs’, where you can edit Wikipedia pages on specific topics. Confirmed groups include Women In Chemistry Toronto (WICTO), Women Of Colour In STEAMM Canada (WOCScan) and UofT Coders.
To make the most of the event, please bring your own laptop, and your own mug to minimize waste. Food and coffee/tea will be provided. For more details (including an event schedule), please refer to our Eventbrite page, or feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
