Introduction to Open Scholarship: OER, Open Access, and more!

Open scholarship is the broad term used to describe the parallel movements in computer engineering, research, education and scholarly publishing that seek to create and disseminate knowledge to all. From free computer programs to zero-cost textbooks, downloadable datasets to unlocked journal articles, open scholarship provides students and educators alike with a vast array of accessible and helpful resources.

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the basics of “open” with a special emphasis on Open Education Resources (OER) and learn the skills to practically apply these principles into their daily scholarly practice.

Participants will be asked to come prepared with a project they wish to work on. Ideally, the project should involve some multimedia aspect, such as images, interactive elements or video.

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Know the terms Open Scholarship, Open Access, Open Source, Open Research and Open Education and the principles they describe
  • Understand copyright and its relationship to open scholarship
  • Be able to identify and apply Creative Commons open licences
  • Be able to find, assess, create and adapt OERS
