Overview

In this workshop, learners can expect to have 3 hours of hands-on programming experience in a friendly, inclusive, beginner-friendly environment! But why learn the UNIX shell? The shell is a great way to be introduced to programming concepts, it enables you to automate repetitive tasks, and it also underpins many other pieces of computing infrastructure.

Participants are required to have a computer where they can use the UNIX shell, and a few files downloaded in advance: UNIX Shell Set-up Instructions.

If you require assistance with the set-up, please email Jordan Pederson in advance of the workshop.

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcome of the class is for you to:

    • Understand when to use the command line.
    • Use commands to print, view, move, copy and delete files.
    • Implement a loop to rename several files.
    • Use the shell to count, sort, and search for data within files.
