The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

The Opportunity

The University of Toronto Libraries seeks a proactive and collaborative librarian to both deliver and facilitate research and teaching support to our user communities.Reporting to the Assistant Head of User Services at John P. Robarts Library, the User Services Librarian will engage students and faculty at the Factor-Inwentash School of Social Work (https://socialwork.utoronto.ca/) —including the Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency program (https://socialwork.utoronto.ca/admissions/msw-itr/) —and other social science departments. These programs comprise of a diverse student body with a curricular emphasis on social justice and critical praxis. This work will involve teaching research and related skills, consulting with users about their research projects, and assuming collection development responsibilities to support the teaching and research needs of the faculties. Additionally, the librarian will support social science researchers with methods-driven reviews as a consultant and work with research teams as a co-author through the Systematic and Scoping Review Collaboration (https://gerstein.library.utoronto.ca/systematic-scoping-review-service-ssrs).As a member of the Research & Education team, the User Services Librarian will also lead UTL’s contribution to Ask a Librarian chat (https://ask.scholarsportal.info/) and other remote support services. Ask a Librarian chat is a consortial chat reference service staffed by colleagues throughout UTL and other Ontario university libraries. The User Services Librarian will coordinate UTL’s contribution through mentorship, training, scheduling, documentation, resource development, and targeted communication. Student casual workers reporting to the User Services Librarian staff this and other research help services. Hiring, training, and ongoing supervision with anti-oppressive management style is critical to success in the role.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the liaison librarian to the Factor-Inwentash School of Social Work, including the Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency program, and other social science departments through community engagement, teaching, research support and collaboration, and collection development
  • Support social science researchers with methods-driven reviews as a consultant and work with research teams as a co-author through the Systematic and Scoping Review Collaboration
  • Coordinate U of T Library’s contribution to Ask a Librarian provincial chat service
  • Hire, train, and supervise student casual employees
  • Deliver in-depth research support through chat, email, by appointment, and drop in
  • Participate in the strategic and operational work of the Research & Education Team within the User Services Department of the John P. of Robarts Library

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including intercultural communication
  • Proven ability to establish and grow professional relationships
  • Outstanding commitment to user-focused service demonstrated through public service experience
  • Track record of successful collaboration and consensus building
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • An understanding of the diverse experiences of Indigenous Peoples and communities
  • An understanding of approaches and methods of teaching in higher education
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching experience
  • Experience managing staff members in a unionized environment
  • Experience developing and managing collections
  • Lived experience or experience working with Indigenous Peoples and communities
  • Familiarity with methods-driven reviews methodology
  • Experience designing, conducting, and documenting comprehensive literature searches
  • An educational background in a social science discipline
