Job Description
Bring your proven organizational skills and ability to build strong relationships to Archives Ontario where you’ll plan, coordinate and administer the loan and conservation of The Government of Ontario Art collection, comprising approximately 2,700 original works of art in over 75 government buildings across the province, includes historical and contemporary paintings, works on paper, indoor and outdoor sculptures, official portraits, and antique furnishings and decorative objects.What can I expect to do in this role?You will:– Plan and coordinate the administration of Government of Ontario Art Collection loan program.– Lead the annual inventory of loaned artworks and coordinate all logistical arrangements (e.g., loan agreements, moving and installation, security).– Research artists for official portrait program, liaise with Lieutenant Governor, Premier, and Speaker on the selection of the artist.– Contribute to and provide advice and interpretation on art guidelines related to acquisitions and donations to collections.– Plan and coordinate the acquisition of artworks through public donation, commission, purchase, and transfer from within other areas of the government.– Coordinate conservation and preservation services ensuring adherence to professional standards.– Manage the art collection database and ensure online content is kept up to date on the Archives of Ontario website.– Oversee the deaccession and disposition for the removal of items from the art collection.– Draft briefing notes and correspondence related to the art collection.

How do I qualify?

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:

  • You have demonstrated knowledge of art or art history methods and techniques including museum practices, accession, deaccession, and disposition methods, and techniques.
  • You have proven knowledge of art conservation and preservation methods to ensure the acquisition and oversight of external service providers responsible for art collection preservation and conservation.
  • You have the computer proficiency to manage the online art collection visual database and posting of images on the Archives of Ontario website.
  • You have knowledge of procurement and contract management policies to plan and coordinate the acquisition of artworks and procurement relevant to provision of conservation, preservation and moving services.

RESEARCH, ANALYTICAL & PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS:

  • You have problem-solving skills to resolve issues involving the art collection, its loans, preservation, conservation, and administrative management.
  • You have the analytical skills and political acuity to interpret and apply relevant policies and legislative authorities (e.g., Archives Act, Copyright Act).
  • You have researching, reviewing and evaluating skills to ensure artwork meets the requirements for national and provincial significance and to research Ontario artists for the official portrait program.
  • You can assess requests for art collection loans from a range of sources and determine whether loan requests can be implemented.

 

COMMUNICATION & INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • You use your proven interpersonal skills to liaise with the Lieutenant Governor, Premier, and Speaker on the selection of the Ontario artist for the official portrait program.
  • You use your demonstrated oral communication skills to negotiate art collection loans and donations with senior officials and donors.
  • You can draft guidelines and processes for the acquisition and receipt of donations to the collections within the government’s art policy.
  • You have demonstrated writing skills to draft briefing notes and correspondence related to the art collection.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS:

  • You have organizational, priority setting and project management skills to plan and coordinate all aspects of the Government of Ontario Art collection.
