Job Description
The Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA) is a community-engaged archive devoted to documenting and stewarding the Muslim contribution to Canadian heritage. Housed at the institute of Islamic Studies at the UofT, it is a project with both community partners and major archival institutions, including LAC and Archives Ontario. Financially supported by both the UofT and the Ministry of Heritage, it is fosters decolonial approaches to rectify gaps in Canada’s archival landscape. Moreover, with support from other partners, MiCA is planning to roll out a storytelling lab for creative content from collections, which will involve archival staff in educating and training the public in how to use archives and the specific MiCA collection.Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA) is seeking two year-1 students in the Archives & Records Management (ARM) concentration to support (a) archival processing of Ontario records donations, (b) standard setting for a national roll-out of MiCA operations, (c) support for MiCA digital, and (d) research into best practices of archival acquisition and processing from an intersectional perspective. Successful candidates will acquire hands on experience processing records, performing site visits with donors of records, and supporting the national roll-out of the archives. In addition, participants will support forthcoming research to standardize metadata usage on archiving Muslim-identified records, for use in both MiCA and other collections being created around the world.For more information on MiCA, visit our website at: https://www.MuslimsInCanadaArchives.caRequirements1. A year 1 ARM student with an understanding of archival principles and practices, especially those related to archival appraisal and acquisition.2. Strong written and oral communication skills.3. Strong organizational skills.4. Comfort working with databases, in particular Excel spreadsheets, to track leads, donors, and other related matters.5. Completion of INF2184 (Appraisal for Records Retention and Archives Acquisition) highly recommended.6. Experience working in community building, outreach, and/or working with diverse communities (not necessarily in an archives setting) highly recommended.7. Experience working in an archival setting an asset.8. Comfortable setting up, posting, and updating content on MiCA’s communication channels (website, newsletter, social media) [training can be provided]9. Proactive interest in developing and documenting archive work / processes as shareable content for dissemination in communication channels10.
