The Opportunity

Position Overview
Our programs represent our proof of concept for broader social change and the effective execution of our mission. The next phase of development at Visions of Science will require innovative thinking, and an intimate understanding of our communities to ensure effective initiatives are developed and implemented.

STEM Sparks programming will provide engaging, hands-on modules with the aim to increase youth interests, attitudes and awareness with STEM. Programming will be implemented in partnership with the Lay Up Youth Basketball during their day camp hours. Modules will be basketball oriented to cater to the interests of youth.

As a Program Facilitator, you will be responsible for working with team members and stakeholders to implement innovative STEM-based initiatives and content that yield increased skill-based, knowledge, social emotional learning for children and youth in this program.

We are looking for individuals who are confident working with low-income and racialized communities and have a strong command of facilitation. Individuals should be passionate about improving the lives of youth within communities. This position works alongside program coordinators and reports to the various project leads including program managers or directors depending on the initiative.

Contract Type/Term: Summer full-time with opportunities for extension after summer
Hours of Work/Schedule: 35 hours/week

Reports To: Site Lead & Program Coordinator

Major Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

  • Engage with assigned partners, funders and donors
  • Support and implement program content capture for organizational communications
  • Represent the organization publicly
  • Track and reconcile program-related expenses
  • Conduct debriefs, administer participant survey materials and focus group tasks
  • Support and inform the writing of program reports
  • Conduct participant and community outreach activities
  • Engage in team development and recognition activities
  • Pack, restock, and track program inventory
  • Prepare and lead STEM-based workshops for youth grades 6-8
  • Complete lesson planning and implement workshops based on a set curriculum in collaboration with a set team of facilitators and program site lead
  • Present STEM concepts/workshops utilizing inquiry-based learning
  • Create a welcoming and safe learning environment for children and youth that encourages active participation and strengthens their social, emotional, and academic development
  • Participate in and meaningfully contribute to staff meetings, program reviews and debriefs with the Site Lead to assess program progress and efficacy
  • Engage, build rapport, and maintain genuine healthy relationships with program participants, school staff, volunteers, parents and guardians.
  • Foster mentorship through program activities and relationship building
  • Foster academic and non-academic skills to broaden participant horizons
  • Promote responsible and healthy decision-making among all participants
  • Develop leadership, team-building and self-advocacy skills among participants
  • Supervise participants and ensure their safety at all times
  • Administer necessary forms and evaluation tools including surveys and questionnaires in order to assess program strengths and areas for continuous improvement

Experience & Expertise

Education & Training
Candidates who are interested, pursuing or have completed a field of study related to STEM, education, social work, or child and youth care are preferred

Experience
A minimum of one (1) year of experience working with VoSNL and/or two (2) years of program implementation or leadership experience in community development projects focused on children and youth from low­-income/marginalized communities

Documented experience in online and/or in person curriculum development, lesson planning, workshop facilitation, and both formal and informal program and outcomes evaluation techniques

Strong behavioral management, facilitation, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
Demonstrated experience working with diverse teams

Additional Asset(s)

  • Lived experience from low-income and racialized communities
  • Interest in and/or experience with basketball
  • G license and access to a vehicle
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector, and a strong knowledge of issues impacting our communities
