Civic Theatres Toronto Archives: Description of Volunteer Position
About the CTT Archives

Civic Theatres Toronto is comprised of three City of Toronto theatres: the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, and the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Each theatre has its own rich performance history, and the three venues continue to be important hubs for the performing arts in Toronto.

Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteers will work with the Exhibit and Archives Coordinator to physically process and arrange the show files series. Volunteers handle photographs, correspondence, administrative records, and press materials for productions dating to the opening of the three theatres, and ensure that the records are housed appropriately for long-term storage and continued access. Once basic skills of processing and arrangement are developed, volunteers may be asked to aid in special projects such as major rehousing of a series or the description of records on an electronic database.

Time Commitment

All shifts happen between the hours of 11:00am and 5:00pm on weekdays. Volunteers may sign up for as little as one hour or as many as three hour blocks during these periods. Volunteers may not come in for more than one shift per week without discussing it with the Exhibit and Archives Coordinator first. Shifts occur principally at the Sony Centre, with some shifts available at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.

No experience in archives is required for this volunteer opportunity. The Exhibit and Archives Coordinator will provide on-site training and will always be present during volunteer shifts. Students in the ARM (Archives and Records Management) stream at the University of Toronto’s iSchool are preferred, as this opportunity will help students to gain experience in the archives field.
