SUMMARY:
The Sables-Spanish Rivers Public Library Board is a small sized Ontario library
system consisting of a main library and one branch in the rural Township of
Sables-Spanish Rivers. The Township population includes 3500 permanent
residents. In addition to the CEO/Chief Librarian, the library employs one branch
librarian, two assistant librarians and students (when grants permit). The library
has an electronic catalogue system in partnership with Ontario Library Service
North. Programming for various age groups, computer instruction and reference
services provide additional support to Township residents. Our Friends of the
Library group provides program support.

THE COMMUNITY:
Our community is nestled in the LaCloche Foothills region of Lake Huron’s North
Shore, encompassing a large rural area including the communities of Walford,
Massey and Webbwood. Incorporated in July 1998, the Township of Sables-Spanish
Rivers offers all the convenience of urban living amidst tranquil rural surroundings.
While larger urban centres such as Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie are within driving
distance, our many local retail and service establishments easily meet the needs of
our residents, visitors and businesses alike. A well-staffed medical clinic, volunteer
fire department, two libraries, arena/recreational facility, two community halls,
outdoor rinks, restaurants, local farming, a provincial park and endless
opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts in our forests and on our rivers and lakes are
a few reasons why visitors to our community often become long-term residents .

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Challenges:
The Sables-Spanish Rivers Public Library system faces the same challenges as all
public libraries in the province – the balance between relatively static municipal and
provincial funding sources, with rising costs and public expectations. The new CEO
of the Sables-Spanish Rivers Public Library system will be faced with challenges
which include:
providing an inspirational leadership role with staff members who exhibit
varied skills as they serve the different communities
enhancing current programs and implementing new ones
maximizing all sources of revenue – donations, grants and other fundraising
working with a strong and involved Board
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes:
Qualifications:
Degree in Information Systems or, at a minimum, a Library and Information
Technician Diploma
Completed the Excel Librarian Program
Proficient computer skills and upgrading of skills related to new technology
as necessary
Possess a valid driver’s licence and means of travel

The successful candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:

Financial – Budgeting Skills: The Sables-Spanish Rivers funding is
primarily derived from two sources: a yearly Municipal grant, and an annual
Provincial grant. It is expected that the CEO will have experience with
budgeting and possess political dexterity. The successful candidate will
maximize all sources of revenue donations, grants and fundraising monies,
and report accordingly to the Board.
Collection Development Skills: A strong level of experience in this area is
necessary to maintain and improve the quality and diversity of the Sables
Spanish Rivers Library collections.

Personal and Communications Skills: The successful candidate will
possess enthusiastic customer service skills. Strong abilities are essential in
order to speak effectively in public, and to communicate orally and in print
on various levels with persons and groups within the community.
Information Technology: The CEO will demonstrate competence in
operating a web-based library, in addition to the proficient and professional
use of software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalents) and
email. Familiarity with a variety of social media platforms will be
advantageous.

Human Resource Management Skills: The Sables-Spanish Rivers Public
Library system is a non-unionized workplace. The staff are professional and
all are involved in continuous efforts to improve qualifications and
competences. The CEO must be sensitive to all levels of leadership, and
possess the ability to lead with a clear vision. Knowledge of, and interest in
current events in the community and in the world at large is desirable.
L eadership Skills: The CEO must inspire and support all staff. As the leader
of a dedicated team the CEO assumes responsibility for a friendly and
efficient service to the public it serves. It is expected that the CEO will
develop partnerships and a close relationship with the Municipality of
Sables-Spanish Rivers and its departments.

Progress Assessment: The CEO will work with the Board to determine
appropriate benchmarks of service provision and progress toward planned
goals.

Entrepreneurial Skills: The CEO will be responsible for augmenting the
funding of the Sables-Spanish Rivers Public Library system by seeking grants
and creating donor relationships in the community, as well as through
fundraising. The ability to think outside the box is a definite asset.
