POSITION OVERVIEW

The Collections Services Division is a central library service responsible for leading and coordinating the licensing, acquisition, access management, and budgetary/financial system processes to support UBC Library collection development and management. The Collections Services Division serves all UBC Vancouver Library branches in their collection development activities in all subject areas for all library material formats. As a member of the Collections Services team on the Vancouver campus, the Collection Services Librarian with a focus on ongoing resources, plans and implements services that respond to the changing needs of the user communities in support of UBC Library’s Strategic Framework. The Collections Services Librarian is primarily responsible for the negotiation, procurement, access, and management of resources with ongoing budget impact and provides leadership for the Serials Acquisitions, and eResources & Access Teams. In this context, the Collections Services Librarian participates in the development of library policy, procedures, and services.

The Collections Services Librarian will join UBC Library during an exciting period of pivotal transition and collections growth as we operationalize a new strategic investment in the collections program through the President’s Academic Excellence Initiative. The Library is also actively reimagining a new library systems and discovery environment to ensure a user-centered experience of seamless discovery, access, and delivery of library resources. The nature and scope of responsibilities for this and other library positions are expected to change as the Library organization evolves.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Head, Collections Services and consults and works collaboratively with colleagues within the division and throughout the Library system. The position partners with selectors on the building and management of responsive collections, members of Technology, Discovery, and User Experience Unit (TDUX) on metadata, discovery, usage, and accessibility of collections resources, Library Finance on transactions, and the UBC Okanagan Collections Librarian on system-wide endeavours. The position coordinates workflows and communication across the Library to ensure efficiency and understanding. The position recruits, trains, supervises and supports unionized staff (CUPE 2950) and management –and professional staff (AAPS), and may supervise student employees.

The position interacts with members of the UBC community (faculty, students, staff, and the public), and develops and sustains working relationships with those external to UBC (e.g., domestic and international content providers, consortial colleagues).

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED
• Masters-level degree from an accredited program of library, or information science, or equivalent internationally accredited program.
• Ability to build productive relationships and work collegially with a diverse population of colleagues and/or users in keeping with the UBC Respectful Environment Statement.
• Experience in acquisitions and/or electronic resources management, including working with library systems, and building and maintaining relationships with content providers.
• Experience leading and managing an operations-focused team through fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and transparency.
• Evidence of strong professional communication skills, including: written and verbal, in-person and digital, active listening, responding to constructive feedback, the ability to explain complex and technical concepts to those with differing levels of experience and expertise.
• Demonstrated organizational, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Experience with standard computing software and Integrated Library Systems (ILS), and the facility to learn and master new software, systems, and technology, and to generate reports and work with data.
• Experience in project planning, workflow development, and/or writing documentation, both independently and as a member of a team.

PREFERRED
• Demonstrated awareness of trends and developments in collections stewardship.
• Success in leading and communicating change initiatives.
• Ability to adjust and accommodate changing priorities within libraries and academic institutions.
• Experience with electronic resources discovery, resolution, authentication, and administration in a distributed library systems environment.
• Experience contributing to library consortia activities.
• Experience or knowledge related to incorporating equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) into collections services and overall professional practice.
• Familiarity with budgeting.
• Interest in professional development opportunities.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT AND SALARY

Appointment: This is a full-time confirmation-track appointment with an anticipated start date of 1 July 2023. The successful candidate will hold an initial three-year appointment, normally followed by an ongoing confirmed appointment. In most cases confirmation-track appointments are reviewed following the second year of appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant an ongoing confirmed appointment.

The successful candidate will be a member of The University of British Columbia Faculty Association and the terms and conditions of appointment are governed by the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association (https://hr.ubc.ca/working-ubc/faculty-collective-agreement-and-policies).

Eligibility: We are only considering applications from librarians with a maximum of ten years of professional library experience. However, all internal candidates will be considered regardless of years of experience and are encouraged to apply.

Salary: Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications, and will meet or exceed the minimum salaries outlined in the Collective Agreement.
