Employment Opportunity – Library Assistant – Part Time Temporary

St. Michael’s Hospital seeks 1-2 client-centred and creative Library Assistant(s) to join their team on a temporary, part-time basis (10-20 hours a week). This position will be ideal for a current student studying in the library graduate stream or in a library technician diploma program. Library Assistants staff our Information Desk and provide superior customer service to library clients visiting our Library. They also provide administrative support and participate as part of the team on a number of special projects.

Duties and Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of a Library Assistant is to staff our Library Information Desk and provide administrative support for all Library staff. Duties will include:

*   Provide coverage for the Information Desk: working with an automated circulation system (SirsiDynix Symphony WorkFlows); responding to and providing appropriate responses to questions in person and/or over the phone; assisting patrons in locating, retrieving and photocopying materials in the library; etc.;
*   Assist clients with questions regarding various issues related to the Health Sciences Library;
*   Refer in-depth reference questions to other library staff, as needed;
*   Register SMH-affiliated staff and students in the Library’s automation system (WorkFlows) according to established procedures;
*   Circulate materials to borrowers using WorkFlows, explaining borrowing rules, as needed;
*   Check-in materials, observing action required, e.g., hold or reserve; desensitizes security strip and organizes for shelving;
*   Process interlibrary loan and storage requests, checking details, as needed;
*   Check, and responds appropriately to email inquiries;

*   Troubleshoot and provide assistance with the public access computers, printers, photocopiers, etc.;
*   Call IT, Security, Engineering, etc., for various matters, e.g., problem with hardware, temperature, electricity, etc.;
*   Perform shelving responsibilities, e.g., shelving journals, books, etc.;
*   Photocopy select journal articles to fulfill interlibrary loan requests or special rush requests;
*   May be required to create and/or enter data into Excel spreadsheets;
*   May be asked to create and/or edit websites using LibGuides CMS;


·         Currently enrolled in, or completed, a Library Technician diploma or Master of Library Science degree OR at least 1 year experience working in a library

·         Good working knowledge of all MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

·         Demonstration of strong customer service skills

·         Experience working with an integrated library system (SirsiDynix Symphony WorkFlows preferred)
Preferred qualifications

·         Experience working with Springshare products such as LibGuides, LibAnalytics and LibCal
