Winners of 2021 Shift:KPMG Competition

The KPMG:SHIFT case competition gives students the chance to present ideas to senior leaders in both the private and public sectors.

Master of Information student Mounica Thanam was part of the team that won this year’s KPMG:SHIFT case competition. Along with a cash prize, she will also be eligible for a round-one internship interview with KPMG for their upcoming summer program. Mounica, whose concentration is Human-Centred Data Science, completed an eight-month co-op last year and was among the co-op students profiled about they were making out during the pandemic.

Two other MI students, Faria Kandakher and Kamilah Sumar-Ebrahim, were also finalists and will be receiving cash prizes.

SHIFT is an annual public sector case competition sponsored and hosted by the Munk School, KPMG and CCI, a student group at the Munk School. CCI recruits students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, and assigns them to cross-program teams  to tackle a challenging policy case over the course of one week. This year’s  theme was “Digital Identity: A Roadmap for the Province of Ontario.” The event allows students to present ideas to senior leaders in both the private and public sectors. Munk Alumni from KPMG act as the SHIFT Leads to support KPMG recruitment initiatives.

This year, SHIFT partnered with the Rotman School of Management, the Faculty of Information , and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Nearly 100 students across the different programs applied to take part in the annual SHIFT Case Competition. CCI assembled nine teams of four with one team member from each program, including one second year and three first year students. Twenty-nine Faculty of Information students applied for the nine designated spaces, more than from any of the other faculties.

During the week, teams were paired with KPMG consultant mentors and invited to information sessions.  The Case Competition was held on Saturday January 16th.  The Judges included Martin Joyce (KPMG), Imran Bashir (KPMG), Leigh Harris (KPMG), John Scott (2Keys), Neil Butters (Interac) and Lawrence Eta (City of Toronto).
