Bachelor of Information students win hackathon

Submitted on Tuesday, March 29, 2022

Five Bachelor of Information students participated in the first annual hackathon hosted by UX Laurier, “UXL Designathon: Imagination in the Mundane,” a virtual designation dedicated to encouraging students from all backgrounds to open their minds, let their creativity flow, and create a user-centric design.

The theme, Imagination in the Mundane, challenged the participants to explore the unknown, whether that meant exploring a new place, relationships with others or themselves, new cultures, or new even careers. The students were split into two teams.

Team Connect the Dots: Chyna Hui, Julia Wong, Min Chang
Their team designed a mobile app to help high school students to apply to universities. The app allows high school students to search up different schools, compare programs, and book coffee chats with mentors from the schools, all within the app.
Won “Best Pitch” and was a finalist for “Most User-Centric Solution”

Team McDesign: Cindy Ly, Marco Chau
When given the prompt “How Might We Intentionally Explore What Matters to Us?”, their first thought was on multicultural make-up of Toronto and Canada. The goal of their design was to encourage people to try and make new and unfamiliar cuisines, by exploring how other cultures approach cooking.
Won “Most Innovative Design” sponsored by Searchie.io
