Submitted on Wednesday, October 19, 2022

PhD candidate Cansu Ekmekcioglu has been awarded the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) New Leader Award for 2023.

Ekmekcioglu, whose studies encompass human-computer interaction, public policy, information science, critical data studies, and migration studies, is currently investigating the role of emerging technologies in humanitarian and immigrant settlement contexts in Canada. Ekmekcioglu’s most recent policy report, supported by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), can be found here.

“As a first-generation doctoral student, my goal is to draw attention to the ways in which social inequities and complex intersectional identities such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and social class can affect the ability of first-generation scholars to thrive professionally and throughout their careers in our field… In my capacity as the new leader, I will develop a roadmap to better support first-generation information science graduate students in our community.”
