Retention and disposition in the Government of Canada: Directives, standards, and workflows

This workshop summarizes retention and disposition requirements for Government of Canada offices. It will define the differences between large scale directives and policies, disposition authorizations, and institution specific standards. Finally, using an example records retention schedule, it will describe the lifecycle and subsequent workflows of different record types produced in the GC.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate policies, directives, and/or directives for retention and disposition
  • Explain the rationale for retention and disposition of records in the GC
  • Design a records retention schedule based on appropriate sources
