Towards justice in librarianship: Critical information literacy in information practice

It is now more important than ever that information sources are vetted and identities verified. As information professionals, we must seek critical information that speaks to voices belonging to marginalized and racialized people, especially as we witness prolific struggles for justice. In this session, we will discuss what liberatory information practices look like, solidarity work and working towards a justice oriented librarianship. This session will centre marginalized and racialized identities and will be a space where we resist colonialism, racism and heteropatriarchy. You do not need to be well informed on social justice topics to attend, but please come prepared to sit in discomfort and dream about library futures.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Define liberatory and justice oriented practices in librarianship
  • Research Black and Indigenous thought leaders in librarianship praxis
  • Compare practices relating to services and programs
