Understanding, selecting, and using sources in academic writing

Understanding, selecting, and using sources in academic writing

Academic writers are often required to integrate information from outside sources into their work. These sources, which include definitions, theories, procedures, facts, descriptions, policies, and data, are used to develop arguments, present evidence, and assess ideas. Sources are crucial to academic writing which focuses on contributing ideas by continually engaging with the ideas of others.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Identify academic and grey literature sources relevant to ongoing projects or areas of interest using interdisciplinary and subject-specific databases, the web, the University of Toronto Libraries catalogue, and library guides
  • Evaluate sources using the CRAAP test and check for peer review using Ulrichs Web
  • Incorporate sources into academic work by quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing information
  • Organize and reference sources using citation management software (e.g., Zotero, RefWorks, Mendeley)
