Your personalized program timetable, based on the PhD Handbook 2026–2027
Select the month and year you began (registered in) the PhD program. Your milestone deadlines are calculated from your program start.
Program length. The PhD is a full-time, four-year program. The Faculty recognizes five years as an acceptable time to completion and may extend, if necessary, to a maximum of six years. Any student in Year 6+ who has not already scheduled (or is not in the process of scheduling) a Final Oral Exam is not in good standing.
Falling behind. If you are behind schedule but making progress within the first five years, you remain in good standing, though the Doctoral Subcommittee records that you are behind schedule. Making no progress for a year or more means you are not in good standing.
Extensions and leaves. If you cannot complete all requirements within the time limit, you may request program extensions (up to four one-year extensions; the first two require Faculty approval, the second two require Faculty and SGS approval). An approved leave of absence pauses your academic clock and extends your program end date by the duration of the leave — if you have taken a leave, shift the dates shown here accordingly.
These dates are a planning guide. Deadlines are computed from your entry date on the assumption that each program year ends on the day before your entry anniversary. Always confirm your official requirements and dates with Student Services and the Academic Calendar for the year you began your program.
