The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program encourages excellence in graduate studies at publicly-assisted universities in Ontario. Since 1975, the OGS program has been providing merit-based scholarships to Ontario’s best graduate students in all disciplines of academic study. The scholarship program at University of Toronto is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario and the University of Toronto. The Province allocates OGS awards to universities specifying the number of awards that each may offer to their students annually.

Eligibility to Apply

• Level of Study: Master’s or Doctoral
• Required Legal Status:
  • International Students (valid study permit)
  • Domestic Students (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected persons)

NOTE: Students in course-based programs (including our MI, MMSt and CDP) are eligible for the OGS. A significant research component is not required for students to hold an OGS.

The Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) has permitted universities to offer a minimum of two (2) OGS awards exclusively to Indigenous graduate students with the aim to recognize excellence and promote equitable access and participation in the Ontario Graduate Scholarship program by Indigenous applicants.

Graduate students who are Indigenous to Canada (recognized in the Constitution Act, 1982 as a person who identifies with First nations (Status/Non-Status), Métis, or Inuit) and provide this information on their OGS application may be eligible to be considered for one of at least three (3) Ontario Graduate Scholarship Indigenous Scholar Awards and potentially other Indigenous awards offered by the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto.

$5000 CAD per session for 2 or 3 consecutive sessions.

Graduate Award Information sessions are available to students interested in applying for Federal and / or Provincial awards (to start award in 2024-25 academic year). NOTE: international students are only eligible to apply for Vanier and OGS out of the sessions being offered.

Deadline set by Graduate Unit — All deadlines include Visa / International OGS Applicants

• Incoming PhD: March 1, 2025
• Incoming Master’s: March 1, 2025
• Current PhD and Master’s: March 1, 2025

No late applications will be accepted.

• Graduate units will update their competition results on the OGS application system, viewable by applicants no later than June 1, 2024. Official OGS award offers will be issued by SGS at the following times:
• International Applicant Results: May 2024
• Domestic Applicant Results: July 2024
