Course Description
A critical examination of the development and popularity of the comic book and graphic novel, the course (INF2129H — Graphic Novels and Comic Books in the Library) will focus on the history, development, evolution, and interpretation of these “texts.” The relationship between the concepts “graphic novel” or “comic book” and “popular culture” will be interrogated.
Through an investigation of the existing research, students will explore: how different audiences such as children, educators, and librarians interpret the medium, the implications for how we “read” a text, how these materials redefine current attitudes towards youth and adult literacy and how these attitudes affect collections development policies.
