Leadership in Academic Libraries

Course Description

This course will give students an introduction to fundamental skills necessary to be an effective leader in an academic library setting. This includes knowledge about inclusion, diversity and equity (IDE); skills such as emotional intelligence, facilitation, coaching, mentoring, decision-making and change management skills. Additionally, it will provide insight into core responsibilities that leaders assume, including team forming and norming, strategic planning, as well as recruitment, retention and motivation of staff. This course will take a reflective practice approach and will offer practical opportunities for students to learn about the various components of leadership. Additionally, students will be introduced to different academic library organizational structures and have an opportunity to explore their own leadership philosophies.
