Serials Management

Course Description

Selecting and managing serials in libraries and other institutional settings have always posed special challenges for information professionals. In the electronic environment, these challenges have only grown in complexity. This course discusses the evolving nature of serials publication; business models adopted by publishers and vendors of serials; economic effects of serials on libraries; scholarly communication and its diffusion in journals; alternative models for scholarly publications; challenges and opportunities associated with remote-access serials; creating policies and budgets for serials acquisitions; and methods of selecting, licensing, evaluating, managing, and preserving serials collections. The course (INF2128H — Serials Management) combines lectures, guest speakers, class discussion, and student presentations.
