Course Description

INF2406H — Special Topics in Information: Human, Organizational, and Ethical Issues in Health Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

In the past decade, there has been a significant growth in the interest in, and use of, data science (DS) and artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Current and potential future applications include, but are not limited to, robotic surgery, chat bots to provide therapy for mental health problems, interpretation and automated diagnosis of images (e.g., in radiology, pathology, and dermatology), clinical decision support system, digital scribes, and enhanced prediction models. However, the implementation and use of information and communication technology in health care has proven to be difficult, and more challenging than in other industries due to the complexity of the health system and the nature of health data. Data science and AI bring even more challenges that will need to be addressed for these tools to be successfully integrated into routine practice. In this course, we will review the main applications of DS and AI in health, and discuss the unique human, organizational, and ethical challenges they raise.
