Bachelor of Information Practicum

The Bachelor of Information Practicum allows students to take advantage of a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunity during the summer term of their first year. All BI students are required to complete a practicum placement in order to gain professional experience and receive academic credit for doing so.

The practicum is an opportunity to apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom in a professional setting. Students have completed their practicum in well-known and established organizations as well as at start-up companies.

Details

  • Minimum of 100 work hours
  • Positions can be paid or unpaid
  • Positions can be project or skills based

The practicum allows students to:

  • Develop professional competencies and identity while building the bridge from student to emerging professional
  • Engage with industry professionals and build their community
  • Meet their individual career goals and interests
  • Prepare for the demands of today’s changing workforce

Timeline

Year 1 Fall

  • Students begin to define their interests, attend networking events, consult with Careers team
  • Students apply for summer internships offered by large organizations
  • International students connect with CIE to discuss co-op work permit, Student Services will provide a letter to submit to government to apply for permit
  • Students take practicum preparation course: INF401H1

Year 1 Winter

  • Students continue to apply for industry positions, broaden search

Year 1 Summer

  • Students take up their practicum positions
  • Students enrol in Work Integrated Learning Practicum course: INF402H1
