Programs offering Work Integrated Learning
At the Faculty of Information, the term Work Integrated Learning, or WIL for short, is used to refer to practicum placements, co-op placements and internships. The Bachelor of Information, Master of Information and Museum Studies programs all offer work integrated learning opportunities.
All Bachelor of Information (BI) students complete a Practicum course for academic credit in the summer between the first and final years of the BI. Students gain invaluable hands-on experience and build their resume with the guiding support of a faculty member. Students work in diverse sectors to complete their 100 hours of practicum work.
The Master of Information (MI) program offers a co-op option to qualified students. These students complete one or two terms of paid fulltime co-op work while earning academic credit. Students gain professional experience in their field of study as they apply knowledge from their course work to real world situations.
The Faculty of Information offers two practicum courses to Master of Information (MI) students. Enrolled students choose their host organization from the class’s practicum placement list. This choice is made in consultation with the course instructor and a Careers advisor to reflect the student’s best interests and options.
Master of Museum Studies (MMSt) students can participate in optional internships, developing their skills at museums and heritage institutions across Canada and beyond. During their 10-12 week placements, students apply knowledge gained in courses to various areas of museum practice and engage in hands-on work with museum professionals.
Master of Museum Studies (MMSt) students in the second year of their program work together throughout the fall and spring terms to prepare one or more exhibitions. The exhibition(s) take place at the end of the second year at various University sites or in conjunction with local museums. Students are involved in all aspects of exhibition development.
