Marquee Events, Recurring Conferences and Lectures
The Faculty of Information holds several marquee and recurring events including the Ian P. Sharp and Bertha Bassam lectures and the Annual University of Toronto iSchool Graduate Student Conference.

Throughout the academic year, the Centre for Culture and Technology holds Monday Night Seminars designed to carry on the tradition of public seminars at the University of Toronto, first established by Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan. The seminars are designed to challenge prevailing cultural notions about technology and provoke new insight on the possibilities for a more equitable technological future.
This annual research event highlights the breadth and depth of research being done by students at the Faculty of Information. Students present and discuss their current research endeavors, showcase work and let the Faculty of Information, U of T, and the broader public know about their research.
The Ian P. Sharp Lectureship was established at the Faculty of Information Studies in 1989 with an endowment from I.P. Sharp Associates Limited, A Reuters Company, in honour of its founding president and former chief executive officer, Ian P. Sharp. It is intended to bring internationally renowned individuals to the campus to explore the transformative effects of information practice. The lectures, which are open to the profession and members of the public, are delivered every three to four years by a distinguished figure in information science and related fields.

The Bertha Bassam Lecture in Librarianship was established by the Faculty’s Alumni Association to honor Dr. Bertha Bassam, Director of the Library School from 1951 to 1964. The lectures, which are open to the profession and members of the public, are delivered every three to four years by an outstanding individual, whose topic and experience are relevant to librarians and librarianship.
Deane and Professor Emerita Lynne Howarth delivered the last Bertha Bassam lecture in 2023. Her topic was Beyond Binaries and Boundaries.
The Digital Curation Institute holds talks and lectures, which are publicized by the Faculty when they take place.
