For their capstone project, Museum Studies students Liz Sullivan, Lana Zagorac and Devin de Silva collaborated with TIFF’s Film Reference Library to explore how sound effects, music and even silence shape audiences’ experience and linger long after the credits roll.
The resulting exhibition, From Silence to Sound: Tuning the Auditory Experience, features objects from the the library’s Christopher Dedrick, Mary Pickford and David Cronenberg collections. It examines the the vital role that effects and compositions play in shaping popular culture and shows how sound can be the bedrock of cinematic experiences.
The exhibition launch on March 27 featured a panel with Jane Tattersall, supervising sound editor for Formosa Group, and Aaron Tsang, composer, producer and U of T professor, who discussed the role of sound in film storytelling.
The exhibition can be seen at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. The students also discussed their work in an interview with CBC Radio’s Metro Morning.
The student team was mentored by Assistant Professor Maggie Hutcheson, who co-teaches the Museum Studies Capstone Projects course with Associate Professor Irina D. Mihalache.
