Bio
Dr. Kelly Lyons is a professor in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, with a cross appointment to the Department of Computer Science. Her research interests include service science, knowledge mobilization, data science, and software engineering. Prior to joining the University of Toronto, she was the program director of the IBM Toronto Lab Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS). From 2015 to 2020, she served as Associate Dean, Academic in the Faculty of Information, and from 2020 to 2021 she served as the Dean’s Advisor on Pandemic Planning and Response. From January to June 2023, Lyons served as Acting Vice Dean, Research and Program Innovation in the School of Graduate Studies. From July to December 2023, she was an Associate Director of the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society (SRI) and she served as Interim Director of the SRI from January to June 2024.
Lyons is the co-author of numerous articles and book chapters, and her research has been published widely in journals such as Information and Software Technology, Empirical Software Engineering, and Service Science, and in conference proceedings including the Annual International Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering, the IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society, and IEEE International Conference on Software Analysis, Evolution and Reengineering. She is co-editor of the Handbook of Service Science, Volume II, Service Science: Research and Innovations in the Service Economy (2019), which includes 36 chapters by 85 contributors. Lyons has served on program committees for conferences, given many keynotes and invited presentations, and co‐chaired several workshops. She has received a 2023 CS-Can|Info-Can Distinguished Service Award, a 2018 ICSE Distinguished Reviewer Award, a 2015 CASCON Best Paper Award, and two Outstanding Leadership Awards from IBM Toronto Lab. Lyons is the co-holder of three patents for software applications. She has been the recipient of an NSERC Strategic Partnership Grant, NSERC Discovery Grant, an NSERC Collaborative Research and Development Grant with SAP, two NSERC Engage Grants (with Sciencescape and Dell), several MITACS Accelerate Grants, a SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grant, two University of Toronto/UCL research grants, a Data Sciences Institute Catalyst Grant, an IBM Smarter Planet Faculty Innovation Grant, an IBM Advanced Studies Grant, and has received funding through the GRAND Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE). Lyons is an IBM faculty fellow, and served on the Board of CS-Can|Info-Can, Canada’s leading organization for the discipline of computer science from 2020 to 2023. From 2020 to 2022, she served on the Board of the INFORMS Service Science Section. From 2008 to 2012, she was a member‐at‐large of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Council and a member of the Women’s Executive Council of the ACM. Lyons received her PhD in computing and information science from Queen’s University in 1994.
