Bio
My research explores the social and knowledge implications of mobile media practices during major life transitions (www.projectmobility.net). I am particularly interested in how emerging mobile platforms such as smartphones and social media applications may support or hinder access to information and social resources within personal networks. I draw on the individual-level social capital theory, the notion of everyday information practices, and the affordances concepts to explore diverse daily practices and account for instabilities in the structural conditions of the environment in which those practices occur. To undertake my dissertation project, i incorporate log data into more traditional survey and interview instruments to enhance the validity of self-reporting measures.
I started my career as an advertising Art Director for automobile brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi and Hyundai Motors. The experience gained during this time allowed me to develop critical and pragmatic perspectives on information practices and media culture. I received my Master’s in Information Policy and Knowledge Media Design, during which time i specialized in digital privacy and mobile media UX. Currently, i’m also teaching in communication research methods and user interface design at the university while completing my doctoral program.
I personally prefer my name to be spelled in all lowercase to reflect on the politics of representation and my subjective positionality and privileges –– with the hope to provide space for ’O’thers and ‘Y’ou.
