Concentration Details

Human-Centred Data Science

The Human Centred Data Science (HCDS) concentration provides students with the skills and knowledge to deal with complex, large-scale data sets and information systems while integrating a human-centred and societal focus throughout. Students are educated in the fundamental concepts, theories, practices and different horizons in which data is retrieved and manipulated while they apply new technological developments and realize the impact such developments may have on society.

Students develop knowledge of software principles and practices, programming concepts and techniques, data structures, and system development methods and practices. At the same time, they also become familiar with relevant ethics and policy considerations and concepts such as user-centred visualization.

HCDS Graduates: Where are they now?

Victoria Chui (MI, Class of 2023)

Victoria chose the HCDS concentration to pursue her interest in statistics and coding. She appreciated that it did not require a strong programming or mathematical background as everything she needed to know was taught in the first year, after which she could tailor her experience to be as technical or as theoretical as she wanted. Victoria is now pursuing a PhD at the Faculty of Information.

Tiffany Lee (MI, Class of 2023)

Tiffany did a double concentration in UXD and HCDS. She valued the close-knit cohort, interactive discussions and practical assignments examining real-world ethical dilemmas. She credits the iSchool with not only equipping her with design and coding skills, but encouraging her and her peers to transform the information ecosystem into a more humane and inclusive space. She is now a UX designer at Rainforest Connection.
