Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.Location: North Campus, University of Alberta.Department SummaryThe University of Alberta Museums (UAM) seeks a dynamic, creative, and team-oriented Curator for the University of Alberta Museums Art Collection (UAMAC). Reporting to the Director, University of Alberta Museums, the Curator is accountable for collection development and associated independent curatorial research including establishing a greater international profile for the collection; facilitating new acquisitions; ensuring physical and intellectual access to the UAMAC; contributing to collection policy and procedure development; maintaining professional museum practices; and contributing to fund and resource development. The Curator works as part of the Art Team which includes the Director, the Curator (Mactaggart Art Collection), the Curatorial Assistant and the Collections Assistant. The Art Team works collaboratively with other members of the UAM Team and relevant academic units (e.g., Art and Design, East Asian Studies, Human Ecology, Anthropology and Native Studies).The University of Alberta Museums Art Collection (UAMAC) is one of 30 collections that comprise the University of Alberta Museums, an award-winning model for teaching, research, discovery learning, and access in post-secondary institutions. The UAMAC consists of more than 10,000 objects and includes paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures by Canadian and international artists, both historical and contemporary, and the Mactaggart Art Collection of textiles, costumes, paintings, handscrolls, albums, engravings, and other artifacts from ancient and modern East Asia. Building on strengths in Inuit prints, strategic directions for the UAMAC include a focus on indigenous art and artists. Edmonton and the University of Alberta are situated on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional meeting ground and home for many Indigenous Peoples, including Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, and Nakota Sioux.DutiesThe Curator will be engaged in the following activities:Developing research program goals related to the Collection that ensure scholarly documentation, advance scholarship, ensure the collections’ records are accurate and reflect current scholarship, and broaden access to the Art CollectionConducting independent research that creates new knowledge resulting in collection-based exhibits, publications, web-based projects and targeted public programs to engage various publics with the collections and in the Curator’s area of expertiseEnsuring prescribed museum standards of care, handling, movement and storage of objects in this Collection are followedServing as an ambassador for the University of Alberta Museums/UAMAC by establishing and fostering relationships within the field of Art internationallyTeaching and/or delivering workshops, lectures and seminars as required for University of Alberta students,peers, the general public, etc.Supervision of Art Team membersContributing to the development of the volunteer and student internship programQualificationsTo be successful in this position, the incumbent will have the following education and experience:Master’s Degree in Art history (e.g., contemporary art, Indigenous art, etc.), studio art or a related discipline; PhD preferred, or an equivalent combination of studies and experienceEvidence of curatorial achievement including demonstrated success in collections research and publication, exhibition planning and execution, and collections managementAbility and experience to develop and conduct independent research projectsAbility to interact effectively with all levels of campus personnel, students and volunteers internally, general public, potential Collection donors, and related museum/gallery professionals externallyOverall and current knowledge of museum standards related to collections management, care, handling and exhibition of Collections objectsInformation management skills including use of collections management systems and word processingWritten and verbal presentation skillsSupervisory skills related to paid staff and volunteersPhysical ability knowledge and skills required to organize the CollectionCore competencies include: achievement orientation, analytical thinking, conceptual thinking, flexibility, impact and influence, organizational awareness, planning and initiative, self-confidence, self-development, sense of urgency, and team leadership and team cooperationInterested applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, and the names of three references to the attention of Christine Conciatori, Director, University of Alberta Museums. |
