UTS is looking for an Associate Teacher to operate and facilitate activities in a Makerspace collaborative workspace. This position will cover a leave of absence, from March 6 through to July 31, 2023.The Associate Teacher – Makerspace, will work under the general oversight of the Head of Innovation & Research and will oversee the day-to-day coordination and operation of the Innovation Lab, and provide direction and support to all users in the Makerspace/Innovation Lab. Duties will include:taking responsibility for the safekeeping of the Makerspace/Innovation Lab equipment and providing a safe working environment for students, staff, and faculty by ensuring that proper safety procedures are considered and implemented into all activities within the Makerspace.providing safety training on safe use of equipment; and supporting labs and design projects, as well as determining inventory/storage needs, expected usage/distribution and re-stocking/maintenance requirements as needed.reaching out and collaborating with:UTS teachers on the design and implementation of curricular integration of making, including shoulder-to-shoulder classroom support.UTS external research partners and two UTS Makers-In-Residence to support teacher integration of making into the curriculum.Supporting UTS Summer programs during the month of July.QualificationsThe successful candidate will be in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers and will ideally have Technological Education qualifications with a focus (or ABQ) in Technological Design (Grades 9 and 10), as well as 2 years of teaching experience, or a combination of education and related experience.In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following experience and skillset:Knowledge of makerspace equipment and activities is required, including experience with: sewing machines, laser cutters, 3D printers, Micro:bits, Arduino, Raspberry Pi.Safety certification/qualifications, experience, and comfort with power hand tools including: power drills, impact drivers, jigsaws, circular saws.First Aid/CPR certification.Experience in some form of making, crafting, creating art, tinkering, building, digital crafting machines.Experience designing and leading hands-on activities and programming with a diverse group of staff and students at various skill levels.Ability to learn to use new technology equipment.Self-motivated; takes initiative; proactive.Committed, reliable, ability to work both independently and collaborate as part of a team.Previous work in the area of Maker Education.Strong understanding of the Ontario Curriculum.Demonstrated superior computer skills, in MS Word, Excel and Google Suite.Working at UTSEquity, diversity and inclusion underpin the UTS experience.
