Job Description
The Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries seek a creative, dynamic and public service oriented professional librarian to fill a contract position as Special Collections Librarian.
TMU’s Special Collections was established to help support the learning and teaching needs and facilitate the scholarly, research and creative activities of the TMU community by acquiring and preserving photography, film, and cultural history objects. Special Collections sits in the
Archives & Special Collections (A&SC) unit, under the leadership of the Head of Collection Services. Currently, TMU employs Sierra and AtoM, and is developing Islandora as a digital asset management system.
The successful candidate will apply conservation and preservation best practices to records in a wide range of formats and work to enhance access to our collections for TMU faculty and the wider community. Within the context of a rapidly evolving academic special collections library environment, the successful candidate will participate in the effective planning, support,
expansion and management of collections and services in special collections. By collaboration with faculty, staff and students, the successful candidate will ensure and advance the role for special collections in the research, teaching and learning of the University.
Qualifications:
To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required and preferred qualifications:
- Completion of an ALA accredited Masters degree in Library Science or Information Science; A specialization in Archival Studies and/or Special Collections is preferred
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in an academic or equivalent library environment, experience with the management of digital collections is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current professional preservation and conservation management and best practices in special collections, archives, and rare books library operations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the implementation and maintenance of a Digital Preservation Management Program.
- An understanding of current cataloging rules and standards, including RDA, AACR2, LCSH, MARC formats, and LC classification. Understanding of archival arrangement and description, including standard schema such as RAD, Dublin Core, ISAD, etc.
- Commitment to community engagement and outreach such as exhibitions, blog postings, publications, and other events to showcase the work of A&SC
- Demonstrated interest in emerging technologies relevant to archives and special collections.
- Demonstrated project management, and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Previous liaison experience in an academic setting would be an asset.
