Job Description
ResponsibilitiesThe Canadian Energy Museum’s Executive Director is responsible for managing the operationsof the museum and it’s team, managing the museum financials and budgeting, and makingdecisions related to museum best practices and standards.The Executive Director is also responsible for the mid-range planning of the museum’sprograms, exhibits and future events to ensure the vitality of the museum into the future.Responsibilities include:• Work in conjunction with the Board of Directors to develop a sustainable strategic direction andestablish initiatives to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local, province-wide,national and international awareness and prominence.• Direct the Museum’s operations, to include the alignment of revenue opportunities,development, education and public programming, finance, external communications, andstaffing.• Manage and lead staff (full-time, year-round and seasonal), volunteers, and consultants.• Create a strong financial backbone – balanced budgets, sufficient cash reserves, financialsystems that allow for monitoring of financial status.• Work closely with the staff to implement robust fundraising activities and results. Lead andparticipate in all fundraising and development activities, oversees grant writing and developingrelationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors.• Serve as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Museum, establish strong partnerships in thecommunity and enhance the Museum’s public image to expand interest and support.• Work closely with the Marketing & Business Development staff to create an effectivecommunications plan to raise the profile of the Museum. Oversees and directs development ofmarketing initiatives.• Manage, secure and maintain the property and facilities of the Museum, as well as thecollections held in public trust.• Advocate on important issues in historic preservation resources on the local, regional, national,and international level.• Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction. Develop and implementstrategic plans with Board input.• Develop, manage, and grow an annual operating budget.Knowledge, Skills and Assets• Knowledge of standards and best practices for museums, nonprofits, or similar organizations, aswell as a history of involvement in relevant professional organizations.• Strong skill in fundraising and audience development.• Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking.• Proven ability to work cooperatively, creating an effective partnership with the board ofdirectors, enabling them to discharge their governance responsibilities and seek theirengagement in sharing their skills, expertise and work in pursuit of CEM’s mission.• Competent in managing museum operations. Demonstrated ability to supervise, as well as towork successfully with, museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies.• Strong business management skills.• Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills.• Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings, when needed. Abilityto provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction. Experience developing, with boardsof directors, and implementing strategic plans.• Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget. Strongbusiness management skills.• Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills.• Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings, when needed.• Minimum three years experience in museums in increasingly leadership roles.Compensation and HoursThis is a full-time position with some flexibility for remote work (one or two days a week). Someevening and weekend work is required.The Canadian Energy Museum offers a benefits package to full-time employees uponcompletion of probation, and an annual salary of $67 000-$73 000
