Job Description
Applications are now being received for Learning Place instructor in the Marketing and Community Development Department with the Markham Public Library. The positions will be assigned to deliver programs at any one of our eight branches.VISION FOR THE POSITIONMPL Learning Place Program Instructors deliver MPL’s literacy and technology based programs, creating a dynamic, inclusive and supportive environment for participants. Learning Place Instructors are hard-working, flexible, dynamic instructors who are excited to facilitate innovative programs that are both fun and educational. Learning Place Program Instructors are enthusiastic teachers who enjoy bringing our lesson plans to life. This position is ideal for candidates who enjoy a lot of creative freedom and take responsibility for fostering a supportive and amazing learning environment.RESPONSIBILITIES1. Facilitates, leads and supervises the program2. Delivers Markham Public Library’s lesson plans3. Works alongside and provides direction to volunteers instructing classes at MPL’s branches over 5-8 week sessions4. Prepares and organized program equipment and supplies for the lesson5. Provides excellent customer service to parents6. Creates a great space for learning to happen7. Ensures safety at all times8. Other duties as requiredSCHEDULE & COMMITMENTLearning Place Instructors are expected to commit to every session of the program they are facilitating. Programs typically run once a week for 8 weeks during weekday evenings and weekends at multiple library branches. Learning Place Instructors will be provided orientation and training prior to the first session.QUALIFICATIONS1. Successful completion of a high school diploma. Candidates pursuing studies in early childhood education, or other areas related to children and teaching preferred.2. Early Childhood Education Diploma an asset.3. Demonstrated experience working with children in an educational or camp setting4. The position works at various MPL locations, and accessibility to these locations is the responsibility of the incumbent.5. Successful candidates must have a valid Vulnerable Sector Screening prepared within the last six months.DEMONSTRATED SKILLS1. Is energetic and enthusiastic with demonstrated skills in motivating children.2. Has an interest in and understanding of early childhood development including the development of pre-literacy skills.3. Has exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact positively with library customers and program participants from diverse cultures.4. Strong leadership skills and exceptional oral communication skills required.Please note that Markham Public Library is open 7 days per week, and regular weekend work might be required.
