Job Description
Ontario Tech University seeks an innovative, collaborative and user-centred Business Librarian to join a dynamic Library team serving both Ontario Tech and Durham College. The Library’s mission is underpinned by a steadfast commitment to consider all aspects of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility as well as a determination to continually work to advance the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.

In concert with a team of dedicated liaison librarians, the Business Librarian is instrumental in advancing both institutions’ teaching, learning and research missions through the development and delivery of excellent Library programs, services and collections.  Establishing strong connections with Ontario Tech’s Faculty of Business and Information Technology and Durham College’s Faculty of Business, the Business Librarian conducts customized information literacy instruction (in classroom and online settings), research consultations (in-person and virtual) and general reference support. Proactive outreach and engagement activities with faculty and students ensures informed and relevant collection development to support curricular and research needs.

Nature of work: 

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Scholarly Resources, the successful candidate has in-depth knowledge of business literature and resources, including specialized financial databases and datasets. Expertise in the areas of research impact, bibliometrics and researcher identity management is highly desirable.

Responsibilities/accountabilities: 

Information Literacy & Research Services

  • Collaborate in the planning, delivery and evaluation of an array of literacy initiatives, including information, digital, media and data literacies. Teach library classes and deliver workshops for a variety of subjects and specialized services (e.g. copyright, research metrics, data, scholarly communication) in person and online.
  • Assist with the effective integration of library resources in the curriculum through workshops, class sessions and faculty liaison.
  • Provide both general and subject-specific reference assistance, in person, online, via telephone, and through small group and individual consultation
  • Develop customized information resources and tools to support curriculum, faculty research and administrative needs.
  • Remain abreast of developments in information and digital literacies.
  • Develop online instructional modules, research guides, and other content to support teaching and learning.

Collection Development

  • Build collections that support the curricular needs of both Ontario Tech University and Durham College.
  • Monitor and assess the value and continued relevance of the Library’s collections in meeting current and future curriculum and research needs.
  • Engage in collection development and maintenance activities including selection and deselection in a variety of formats (print, media, electronic).

Outreach & Liaison

  • Maintain current awareness within the disciplines of business and IT.
  • Promote and raise awareness of Library strategic directions, services, and resources as well as partner and collaborate in areas such as scholarly communication, open access, hosting/publishing institutional scholarly output.
  • Establish and maintain excellent communication channels and liaise with faculty, staff, students, and other library users.
  • Develop skills, knowledge and awareness of emerging trends to maximize efficiency, improve access to resources, and develop best practices.
  • Serve on pertinent college and university library committees such as those associated with the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) and College Libraries Ontario (CLO).
  • Participate in professional organizations such as SLA, OLA, CAPAL etc.

Research Impact & Metrics

  • Support faculty research across the entire scholarly communication cycle, including faculty research metrics.
  • Provide training and consultation to the Ontario Tech and Durham College communities on the topics of bibliometrics, research impact and research identity.
  • Work with faculties, departments, the Office of Research Services, research centres and institutes, and others to understand appropriate use of bibliometrics and other tools that generate research impact measures.
  • Design, develop and maintain effective training and resource materials related to bibliometrics and research impact.
  • Act as a resource person/expert consultant for liaison librarian colleagues and campus partners.
  • Maintain awareness of scholarly communication, digital scholarship/pedagogy, and emerging trends in higher education.

Required Skills: 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in collection development and emerging practices in collection management.
  • Familiarity with the scholarly communication ecosystem including emerging publishing models and research dissemination practices.
  • Demonstrated understanding of methods for measuring and communicating research impact.
  • Commitment to collaboration and collegiality.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Intellectual curiosity and demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Demonstrated project coordination skills and the ability to prioritize work and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to multitask, remain flexible and adaptable in a variety of professional contexts.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and presentation skills.

Required Education:  

  •  MLIS or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution. * Verification of Academic credentials may be required

Required Experience:  

  •  Up to 3 years of professional library experience, preferably in an academic library setting.
