Job Description

The Muskoka Lakes Museum, in Port Carling Ontario, exists to collect, document, preserve, research, exhibit and interpret all those objects which illustrate the settlement and development of the Muskoka Lakes district. The Museum places emphasis on the boat building industry of the Muskoka Lakes.
The Museum serves the public by carrying out these functions and by its emphasis on regular programming and special events, publications, information services, educational programming and research facilities, welcoming over 2000 visitors between Victoria Day and Thanksgiving each year.

Hours: 9 am – 5 pm, Wednesdays – Sundays, as well as Canada Day. Occasional evenings. Subject to change.
The Muskoka Lakes Museum regularly runs a number of programs and special events for visitors and members. These programs include: two Open Houses, our “After Hours” lecture series, fundraisers, as well as regular programs for visitors of all ages. The objective of the Events and Programs Coordinator is to assist in conceptualizing, planning, and executing these programs and events in order to promote heritage and cultural learning to the public and for the benefit of the museum.

Job tasks include:
– Visitor Services including: welcoming visitors, processing admission, promoting memberships and donations, stocking and managing the gift shop, and answering questions about specific galleries.
– Assisting in planning, developing, and executing programs and special events.
– Assisting with the preparation of online exhibits for the winter months.
– Contacting vendors, speakers, advertisers, sponsors, and other third parties involved in programs.
– Organizing and executing weekend programming for all ages.
– With the Marketing Chair, develop social media and website presence.
– Conducting educational programming and tours tailored to specific age groups.
– Other relevant tasks as assigned by the Curator.

Requirements:
– are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
– are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
– are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
– are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.
– Asset: Having / working towards a program in Advertising and Marketing, Project Management, Communications, Media, Tourism, Museum Studies, History, or a related field.
– Interest in and / or experience in event planning.
– Interest in and / or experience in marketing to the public.
– Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, outgoing and comfortable with speaking and communicating with the public.
– Standard First Aid (by start of employment).
– Computer literacy with experience in Microsoft Office and some knowledge of social media and Canva (asset).
