Submitted on Friday, November 13, 2015

ais_logo-header-high-res1The iSchool’s AIS (Association for Information Systems) Student Chapter at the University of Toronto has once again gained worldwide prestige winning their second AIS award in a row.

The AIS is the premier worldwide professional association for individuals and organizations who are leaders in the research, teaching, practice, and study of information systems.

Out of over 70 AIS Student Chapters, the University of Toronto’s AIS Student Chapter has won an “Outstanding Student Chapter Award,” which recognizes the impact the Chapter has on professional development, membership, careers in IS, community service, fundraising, and communications. Furthermore, the U of T AIS Chapter was the only winning chapter outside the United States.

The University of Toronto AIS Student Chapter Faculty advisor, Dr. Kelly Lyons, was honored and delighted with the news, saying “I’m extremely proud of the students who lead our AIS Student Chapter. Each year, they organize important events and host valuable activities for our students in the areas of information systems and design, knowledge management and information management, and knowledge media design.”

In 2013-2014, the iSchool’s Chapter was one of four that won an award in the category for Professional Development.

iSchool AIS President, Jessica Mann says their Chapter is only getting stronger. “We are honoured to have been selected for this award, particularly knowing the quality of the many AIS student chapters around the world. Our thanks go out to last year’s executive team whose hard work made this award possible. We continue to build on their efforts, bringing another year of great career-relevant events and workshops to iSchool students.”

Since the beginning of this year, the iSchool AIS Student Chapter has organized a number of events promoting career growth and academic excellence. In October alone, they held several major functions: a Brown Bag Lunch Session for Setting up for Python Data Visualization; a U of T based AIS iSchool  Chapter Alumni Panel to answer student questions about professional development; and a two-day User Experience Workshop, “From Vision to Validation” in partnership with RBC (Royal Bank of Canada).

This month, the AIS Student Chapter will continue their streak of outstanding events by holding an IBM Bluemix Cloud App Development Workshop with the IBM Cloud team. During this day-long workshop participants will get hands-on experience creating and running an app using the Cloud, learn about the present and future of cloud computing, take a walkthrough of IBM’s cloud platform Bluemix, and see the possibilities of one industry standard firsthand for analytics and development.
