Pre-writing techniques: Formulating and organizing your ideas for a stellar paper or presentation

Preparing to write, whether for a research paper or a presentation, can be a daunting experience. However, the pre-writing stage can be the most important step to properly formulate ideas and set yourself up for success. Students enrolled in this workshop will be given tools to effectively conduct pre-writing practices, including: collecting resources, reading, annotating, and organizing notes for a more efficient work-flow. While pre-writing habits vary from person to person, the techniques shared in the workshop will help students re-think the way they approach pre-writing processes and will provide students with strategies to optimize their own pre-writing approaches.

Upon completion of the workshop you will:

  • Gain knowledge to effectively evaluate readings for generative note-taking
  • Become familar wirth the basics of Zotero for the purpose of citation and annotation management (for a deeper dive, see Zotero: Introducing Citation and Reference Management Tools)
  • Learn how produce and arrange tags and headings to improve note readability

Please download Zotero in advance of this workshop.
