Preservation Enclosures for Books and Archives

Preservation Enclosures for Books and Archives

This is an in-person workshop.

Preservation enclosures are one of the best way to protect books from dust, light, and the environment. In this workshop we’ll make two enclosures to house and protect books and papers using archival board and adhesive.

Students should bring 1 to 2 smaller paperback books to use in making the enclosures.

Learning goals:

  • Review preservation needs of books and paper collections
  • Understand the methods behind individual techniques and how they assist in the preservation of the object
  • Apply enclosure construction using knowledge gained and materials provided
  • Complete preservation enclosures and evaluate the effectiveness of the materials
