Geneva Gillis is a PhD student at the Faculty of Information studying community museums in Ontario. Gillis’ research critically examines community engagement frameworks and practices in museums through lenses of community-based and asset-based research. She is particularly interested in how the histories, internal power dynamics, and local relationships of community museums inform the way they approach moments of collaboration and transition outside of the institution with local community members. She asks new questions tailored to small institutions while applying a critical lens to engagement frameworks being promoted in museum communities of practice, for example, EDI, social inclusion, consultation, collaboration. Gillis draws on years of professional and academic experiences to critically analyze the formal and informal practices of engagement work in the hopes to inform the future of museum practices from local community perspectives.
