Diploma of Advanced Study in Information Studies

• Each applicant must have a University of Toronto  MI, MISt, MIS, MLS or MMSt degree, or equivalent.
• Examples of equivalent degrees include, but are not limited to: Master of Science in Information (MSI), Master of Archival Studies (MAS) Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS).
• The Faculty of Information Graduate Coordinator will assess the equivalence of other degrees.
• Each applicant  must have an overall average of B+ in their master’s degree and are expected to be competent in the use of information technology.
• Each applicant must have a good command of English

DAIS can be taken part-time or full-time. However, achieving the goal of a cohesive DAIS program may require significant day-time attendance.  Students must be prepared to take regularly scheduled courses.

DAIS credits cannot be transferred to the PhD program, and there is no DAIS thesis option.

Courses are selected in consultation with the iSchool Graduate coordinator.

The Graduate Coordinator must approve the program before registration by signing the DAIS Program of Study Form

DAIS requires 24 credit hours (i.e., eight half courses):

• At least six courses must be chosen from Master of Information program of courses
• Only one of these courses may be a reading course
• Up to two graduate courses from other departments may be taken

All courses must normally be completed within three years from first registration.

DAIS may be taken on a part-time basis.

DAIS is administered by the iSchool Graduate Coordinator, who will:

• Assess applications for admission to the program
• Consult with DAIS students in developing their programs of study
• Approve each program of study
• Confirm that the requirements of each student’s program have been completed

Pre-Entry Expectations

• General proficiency in computer and Internet use.

End-of-First-Term Expectations

• Designing and delivering effective electronic presentations
• Composing web pages using HTML coding, and basic web page design
• Creating spreadsheets and carrying out basic data analysis
• Searching electronic resources such as article databases, online catalogues, web resources and making appropriate resource choices
• Efficient use of the networking, communication, groupware and course management software available at the iSchool

To help students meet many of these expectations Information Services offers free workshops for all registered iSchool students.

Communication Expectations

The iSchool communicates with students primarily via its website and UTORmail, the university’s email system.

• Students are responsible for ensuring that they have regular access to these systems
• It is recommended that students check the iSchool website and their UTORmail at least daily during the week

Other In-Program Expectations

During the Master of Information program students will be introduced to, and expected to develop a proficiency in database management, programming and application software, as designated by courses.
