Canadian Automotive Museum99 Simcoe St. South, Oshawa, OntarioArchivistFull-time, 37.5 hours/week (Six-month renewable contract) Monday to Friday, April to September, 2023$20/hourJob Summary:The Archivist is responsible for managing the Glenn H. Baechler Canadian Automotive Research (C.A.R.) Library with the goals of improving the current organization and storage status of the collection, preserving the collection and making it more accessible to both staff and the public, creating a more relevant collection, and shaping the future of the library.Duties & Responsibilities:Collections Management:Remove duplicate/irrelevant material from the collection to free up storage space and materials, and to create a more relevant collection.Accession new acquisitions in Past Perfect, prepare Deeds of Gift and Thank You letters for donors, and file accession records.Research and write policy, procedure and forms related to library usage.Respond to access, research, digitization and usage requests from staff, volunteers and the public.Research copyright status of images requested by the public.Conduct research using library collection to support CAM’s programs, tours, exhibits, and events.Research and photograph collection items that are being deaccessioned and sold on EBay.Research and write deaccession reports to help to create a more relevant collection.Evaluate potential donations against current collection to recommend whether they should be acquired.Coordinate the cataloguing and public access of books and manuals with the Oshawa Public Library. Re-shelf material.Conduct preventative preservation measures on items within the collection.Create finding aids and thematic guides for the library’s webpage to increase accessibility.Identify gaps in the collection and recognize areas for growth for planning of future projects.Operations:Create work plans, timelines, 2-year plans, etc. for the library.Work with the Executive Director to create an annual collections budget and recommend purchases of archival material to support library projects.Track status of projects and measurable outcomes.Assign projects/tasks, schedule, supervise, provide orientation, and manage a team of library volunteers and placement students.Manage multiple ongoing library projects to improve the organization, accessibility and storage condition of the collection.Work collaboratively on grant applications and fundraising initiatives to support future library and collections projects.Write copy for library webpage.Other Duties:Assist with opening and closing procedures for the museum.Assist with visitor services tasks, such as answering phone, handling admissions, and gift shop sales.Assist in hosting Third Thursday Zoom Talks as required.Work on other projects as assigned by the Executive Director/Curator.Qualifications:A MA in History, Public History, or Museum Studies or a MLIS.Strong attention to detail.Strong research and organizational skills.Experience working with archival/museum/library collections.Knowledge of artifact handling skills, preventative preservation measures, and archival storage techniques.Experience using digitization technologies.Competencies:Technology: Use online research tools, digitization technology, and web based media. Communications: Interact with others via email, phone, and in-person discussion.Organization: Track projects and measurable outcomes.Customer Service: Work with the public both in-person and virtually.
