Job Description
Qualifications:– A degree from an accredited university in History, Museology, or related field, as well as a graduate degree or certificate in Museum Studies, History, Public History, or related field.– Knowledge of contemporary historic resource management, preservation, and conservation practices for a variety of materials.– Experience curating exhibits for public consumption, both in-person and virtual. Knowledge of the principles of historic interpretation, education, and program management to increase the understanding and knowledge of museum collections.– Computer literacy skills and experience using collections management softwares and online conferencing softwares.– Knowledge of the various methods, techniques, and practices in museum management, with experience in human resource management and financial administration.– Strong interpersonal skills. Must have effective oral and written communication and the ability to work cooperatively interdepartmentally and with non-profit Boards and Committees.– Willingness to undertake professional development.– Knowledge of anti-racism policies and practices of decolonization.– Recognized First Aid training and satisfactory Vulnerable Sector background check.– Valid driver’s licence.Summary of Duties:– Supervise anywhere between one to five staff members, dependent on grant and seasonality.– Coordinate the development and operation of the institution, creating management plans for the protection and use of historical and natural resources; direct staff in areas of interpretation, visitor services, and program development and delivery; maintain publicrelations.Duties of the Curator:– Oversee day to day operations of the site in accordance with policies established by and with the Board of Directors. This includes the capability of developing an operating budget with the Treasurer.– Apply for and complete grant applications within specified deadlines.– Maintain effective staff/volunteer selection, training, professional development, appraisal, and organization.– Follow standard collections management practices and development, and create conservation policies to monitor the condition of artifacts in the collection and instruct museum staff in those practices. Must maintain custody and security of artifacts to prevent loss, defacement, and destruction of artifacts and ensure public safety.– Catalogue and maintain inventory of all artifacts and prepare (de)accession records and gift and loan agreements.– Identify necessary building restoration, repairs, and construction needs to the Board of Directors to ensure all projects are developed by appropriate personnel.– Work with the Board of Directors and leader of the Grounds Committee to ensure seasonal grounds maintenance is completed, identifying required maintenance to amenities, buildings, and property to ensure building sanitary needs in accordance with current health regulations.– Develop and work with Committees and their leaders. Coordinate monthly meetings with Committee Leaders and members.– Maintain interdepartmental relationships with Media Coordinator, Event Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and all members and volunteers of the institution. Ensure no scheduling conflicts with events and programs, and have the ability to organize events,fundraisers, and promotions in conjunction with Events Coordinator.– Participate in local regional organizations (SWHOC, Ontario Museum Association, etc.), represent the organization at public events, and maintain relationships with local educational institutions (University of Windsor, Elder College, St. Clair College, etc.).– Develop content for organization website, ensuring all information presented is accurate and up to date (WordPress and PHP experience an asset, but not required).– Develop and implement education programs with Education Coordinator for various age groups and education levels.– Maintain relationship with Board of Directors with open lines of communications and reports on site operations and finances.
