Job Description

Through the Indigenous Course Requirement (ICR) University of Winnipeg undergraduate students learn about Indigenous peoples and are exposed to Indigenous perspectives and worldviews. Students may choose from a number of three-credit-hour courses in which the greater part of the content is derived from or based on an analysis of the cultures, languages, history, ways of knowing or contemporary reality of the Indigenous peoples whose homelands are located within the modern boundaries of Canada and the continental USA.

The ICR Collection Archives Assistant will assist in the development of the University Archives’ ICR Collection to document this important aspect of University and Indigenous history and aid in the collection’s preservation, accessibility, and discoverability.

Responsibilities:

Reissue call for donations to the archive.
Identify record creators and potential donors.
Identify and inventory relevant record sets.
Finalize donations and arrange for transfer to the University.
Accession records.
Arrange and describe analogue and digital record collections.
Employ preservation strategies for digital and analogue records.
Create web archive.
Create web page.
Identify and digitize content, create metadata, and create digital collection.
Research, write, select content, and create digital and onsite exhibitions.
Identify and organize programming.
Draft and distribute press release and conduct interviews if requested.

Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree and pursuing a Master’s degree in Archival Studies, Information Studies, Indigenous Studies, or History is preferred.
Experience working in an archives or research environment.
Digital archives experience (e.g. digital preservation, digitization, processing born-digital materials) preferred.
Experience with archival content management, description, and preservation software preferred (e.g. CONTENTdm, AtoM, Archivematica).
Knowledge of archives standards and best practices preferred.
Excellent communication skills.
Strong organizational and time management skills.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous in their applications and meet the position criteria.
