Job Description

The Bulkley Valley Museum is looking for a creative and outgoing new staff member to join our core team as a Programming and Administrative Assistant.

Schedule: 35 hours/week, typically Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Events or programming may require flexible works schedule, including occasional evening and weekend hours.

Compensation: $19-$22/hour. Staff are compensated one week (35 hours) of paid vacation time during annual one week holiday closure in December, in addition to BC Employment Standard 2-week vacation.

Job Description
Reporting to the Curator, the Programming and Administrative Assistant is a core full-time permanent staff position at the Bulkley Valley Museum. The Assistant provides leadership for professional programs, visitor services, and experiences that activate the museum’s collections and fulfill our mandate to “make our local history both exciting and engaging”.

The Assistant is a creative and outgoing individual with a good sense of aesthetic who can deliver information in a variety of formats. They are comfortable with digital tools and have experience creating handouts, media, presentations, etc. for educational programming. They are a confident public speaker who is comfortable working with learners from a variety of levels and age groups, including school-aged children. They are detail oriented, and have excellent organizational skills that are applied to both the programming and administrative tasks outlined for the position.

Key responsibilities:
Programming:

  • Lead the museum’s educational and public programming
  • Develop and deliver curriculum-based educational programs and activities for a range of grade/age levels
  • Develop and deliver adult/senior programs, workshops, events and outreach
  • Assist with development of marketing tools (print and digital) for the promotion and outreach of programming activities, including including social media posts, blog posts, newspaper columns, etc.
  • Manage and grow the Museum’s membership list, including renewal reminders

Administrative:

  • General reception and visitor services, including receiving phone calls and emails, responding to general inquiries, greeting visitors
  • Management of the gift shop area, including sales, stocking, cleaning, consignment agreements and payouts
  • Manage booking calendar and invoicing for the rental of the Old Church community events facility
  • Liaise with the Old Church custodian regarding facility scheduling, cleaning, maintenance, etc.
  • Basic financial administration including: managing payables and receivables, completing bank deposits, revenue summaries, petty cash management, merchant account (Square) reporting
  • Keyholder, sharing responsibility for opening and closing the museum
  • Assist with supervision of summer students, volunteers, or other staff as required
  • Assist with general maintenance including dusting, cleaning floors, and maintaining general cleanliness of public spaces

Secondary duties/duties may from time to time include:
Assist the Curator with the management of the Museum’s artifact and archival collections per the Museum’s Collections Policy, assist with development and installation of exhibitions, assist with grant or report writing as requested by the Curator

Qualifications:

  • Diploma, degree, or demonstrated equivalent experience in a field such as education, history, anthropology/archaeology, museum studies, public history
  • Minimum 1 year (consecutive or non-consecutive) interpretive or programming experience, or experience working with programming and/or visitor services
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience with public speaking and/or working with the public (e.g. visitor services)
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work accurately and independently
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Experience using MS Publisher, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or another design program considered strong assets
  • Experience with accounts payable/receivable, preparing bank deposits, cash handling and balancing, or other basic financial literacy considered an asset
  • Knowledge of local and/or regional history considered an asset

Additional qualifications: Due to challenges presented by our work spaces and our location in an historic building, the ability to physically negotiate small/awkward spaces and to climb stairs is required, as is moving/lifting a variety of objects or boxes. Applicants must be able to work at a computer for long periods of time. The hired individual must be able to work effectively in a shared office space. The selected candidate will be required to submit a criminal record check, including vulnerable sector check (paid for by the Museum).
