Job Description

Position Summary

As an integral member of the University Health Network (UHN), the Director of Library and Information Services is an innovative and collaborative leader who takes a visible senior leadership role for the health sciences Library and Information Services across the four hospitals and clinical sites of UHN. The Director leads the development, implementation and evaluation of the vision of Library and Information Services while establishing strategic collaborations and partnerships to lead and contribute to advances in scholarship, learning, innovation and evidence-based care at UHN. As Clinical Education’s Lead Data Steward, this role will also lead from their knowledge of data systems, processes and needs to advance a data-driven culture within the portfolio.

Duties

Provides visionary and strategic leadership as well as administrative and operational oversight of the UHN Library and Information Services at all UHN hospital and clinical sites
Leads and manages a team of highly skilled Information Specialists, Librarians and Technicians including all aspects of human resources and development
Ensures quality information, services and resources are provided in a timely and efficient manner to enable decision-making, learning and evidence-based care
Manages financial resources including developing and maintaining annual operating budgets and leadership of revenue generating opportunities
Oversees the development and delivery of instruction and consultation opportunities for UHN staff in identifying and using information resources efficiently and comprehensively
Develops collaborative and strategic partnerships across UHN (including Learning Resource Centre, Michener), with the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN), Health Science Information Consortium, the University of Toronto, and community libraries
Develops and manages relationships and agreements with publishers, vendors, aggregators and software suppliers
Leads work to preserve and learn from history at UHN including operational leadership of UHN Archives
Leads development, implementation and evaluation of strategic directions in alignment with corporate priorities
Continuously evaluates and improves effectiveness of resources, collections and services
Regularly reviews current, best and next practices to inform directions and opportunities including monitoring trends and emerging digital technologies, business models and licensing practices
Utilizes and promotes data to as an essential resource for informed decision making for the Clinical Education portfolio, including the Library.
Inspires and leads best practices in data stewardship (e.g. data access, use, interpretation, security and trustworthiness) within the portfolio
Demonstrates deep knowledge of the data, systems, and processes within the portfolio and the policies, standards, and rules that apply
Qualifications

Minimum Masters degree in Library Science or Information Studies from an ALA accredited institution
Several years of professional experience in a library with evidence of progressive responsibility, including experience at the management level
Demonstrated knowledge of library operations and the delivery of high quality resources and services in a health care setting
Demonstrated experience with electronic-resource licensing and negotiation
Demonstrated ability to evaluate, plan, and implement library services in a digital environment
Proven track record in financial planning/budget skills
Proven leadership skills with demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate staff and colleagues as well as fostering a culture of learning and collaboration
Knowledge of applicable legislation, such as Human Rights, Privacy and Copyright
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Administrative experience within a health care/academic environment required; experience in a multi-site facility preferred
Demonstrated ability to foster innovation and progressive change
Experience in developing and sustaining effective and collaborative professional working relationships and partnerships
Experience with leading data stewardship including exploring, using and visualizing data for communication and decision making
